- Science teacher of Galkot Secondary School at Galkot, Baglung District, Dhaulagiri Zone from 1970-71
- Science teacher of Bhanubhakta Secondary School, Mangal Bare, Ilam District, Mechi Zone from 1972-73.
- Founder member of National Co-ordination Committee of all Communist Revolutionaries of Nepal in 1975
- Founder member of The Communist Party of Nepal (ML) in 1978
- General Secretary of CPN (ML) from 1982-90
- Members of the Central High Command during the Movement for Democracy in 1990
- Minister for agriculture, Land Reform and management, and Forest and environment in the Interim Government formed in 1990. That Government made the constitution of Nepal 1990 and it held the first general election in 1991
- Member of Parliament elected in the general election held in 1991 in Nepal.
- Standing committee and central committee member elected from 5th national congress held in 1993.
- Member of Parliament elected again in the general election held in 1994 in Nepal.
- Minister for information and communication in 1997 coalition Government.
- Standing committee and central committee member elected from 6th national congress held in 1998.
- Standing committee and central committee member elected from 7th national congress held in 2003.
- After userping all power in the hand on king Gyanendra on Feb.1,2005, again became underground.
- Since 3rd Fab, 2005 became Acting General Secretary of the central committee of CPN(UML) and lead the historical revolutionary movement against Monarchy.
- As the acting general secretary of CPN (UML) contributed to form Seven Party Alliance to fight against Autocratic Monarchy on the basis of common programme.
- Worked as an international representative of the Seven Party Alliance during the movement against the autocratic monarchy in 2006 and contributed to mobilize the support of international community to the democratic movement of the people of Nepal.
- Chairman of Puspa Lal Memorial Foundation.
- General Secretary of the Communist Party of Nepal (UML) 2008 -2009.

These visits were made as a minister, as a member of parliament, as a leader and member of party delegations in various occasions.

| Jail Journey and Underground life : |
- 1969: Some months imprisonment in western district Baglung under State Offence Act while teaching at Galkot and also organizing and mobilizing the students, teachers and rural masses against the then autocratic system of government (Panchayat System) and expelled by the then Zonal Commissioner of Dhaulagiri Zone.
- 1973: again arrested and jailed for fourteen months at Ilam under Public Security Act.
- 1975: Detained for six-months at Ilam during the period of coronation of the late king Birendra under Public Security Act.
- 1975: Since then went completely underground.
- 1976-1979: Again Arrested at Jhapa District on November, 1976 and imprisoned under State Offence Act until April, 1979.
- 1979: Due to growing and expanding mass movement for democracy, King Birendra declared referendum and also declared a general amnesty to the then political prisoners, at that situation released unconditionally from Jhapa jail.
- 1979-1990: Since April 1979 to 1990 spent a long underground political life as one of the leading figures in left movement of the country.
- On 9th April 1990, appeared suddenly to address the massive historical mass meeting in open theatre, after the victory of united people's movement for democracy launched by the United Left Front and Nepali Congress.
